Malaria prophylaxis is a vital part of travel health. Our pharmacists, Mike and Aidan will guide you every step of the way and supply you with the appropriate medication and advice for your trip.
Malaria is one of the most lethal diseases in the world. It is spread by mosquitoes, present in many tropical and subtropical countries.
The disease itself is contracted when a mosquito bites. This can result in the transmission of a parasite called plasmodium falciparum, into your blood. It is this parasite, which then causes malaria. There are 4 types of malaria caused by the plasmodium parasite, and so there are also multiple malaria medications, to cover the different types of the disease.
You can find out if the country you are travelling to is a Malaria hotspot, by visiting the NHS Fit For Travel site.
It is vital that malaria is diagnosed and treated promptly, or it can be fatal. You can however reduce the chances of catching malaria significantly with anti-malaria tablets.
To read more about Malaria, you can visit the NHS choices website.
Trying to avoid being bitten, is your first line of defence against contracting Malaria.
You can do this by taking measures such as wearing long-sleeved clothing and applying insect repellent. The insect repellent you use should ideally contain 70% DEET.
The other physical barrier to prevent malaria transmission, is mosquito nets. Avoiding a mosquito bite is often easier said than done, however.
This is where anti-malaria tablets come in.
Our pharmacists, Mike and Aidan can supply these following a consultation.
